Highlight of prominent disaster relief activities

New World Hope Organization's School Earthquake Safety and Preparedness training project was started in 2009 with a purpose to promote a culture of earthquake safety in the schools of Pakistan. In this project, NWHO Helped schools develop and implement school earthquake preparedness plan and provided training to school teachers, students and parents on earthquake safety, earthquake risks and preparedness. The training program has reached to nearly 92 schools in terms of raising awareness on earthquake safety and earthquake preparedness. SESP was a three-year project but it was extended for another two years, It was started on 01 January 2009.

School Earthquake Safety and Preparedness (SESP) Training Program

NWHO in partnership with Shanti Volunteer Association (SVA) distributed Non Food Items & basic necessities of life materials among the flood affected people in Nowshera District,KPK. Out of the total beneficiaries a majority of them were women. 1,000 flood affected people benefited from the initiatives of NWHO. The distribution was completed in 45 days and each target family received NFIs kits. each consisting of 1 Jerry Can (20 liters), 1 Plastic buckets (20 liters), Plastic Mats (2pcs), Mosquito Nets (2 pcs) with bamboos, 1 Quailt, 1 Pillow, 1 Detol Can(1 liter), 1 Children Sweater, 1 Gas Cylinder Stove, 1 Knife ( Stainless Steel with plastic handle), 6 Tea cups (Normal Size), 1 Steel dish (Stainless Steel), 1 Frying pan  (Stainless Steel with wooden handle), 1 Thermos  (Inside and Outside Stainless high-grade steel without Glass-1.9 Liter), 6 Serving Plates (Stainless Steel) \Size 9", 1 Tawa-Iron, Cooking pots (set 2 size - Silver Steel, Size 11" & 13" Diameter), 6 Spoons  (Steel Spoon), 1 Scoop (Steel spoon with wooden handle), 1 Jug (Stainless Steel),  4 Soap (anti-bacterial 115 Grams), 10 ORS Recommended by WHO, 1 Plastic Lota/mug (Standard size- Good Quality), 4 Dish Soap (Max 225gms),  4 Washing Soap(Gay-Sufi Soap), 1 Comb (Good Quality Big Comb), 1 Scissor (Medium Size), 1 Tooth Paste (Colgate-150 g), 1 Washing Powder 500 grms / Surf 1 kg,  Sanitary cloth (cotton 2 Meter), 5 Shaving Razor ( TG-II- Plus-Korean Made), 4 Tooth Brush (Dantist- certified quality and Management ISO9001), 1 Shampoo (Pantine  Pro-V (Bottle-200 ML), 1 Towel (Big Size-Good Quality), 4 Tissue Roll Luxury Soft Toilet, 1 Nail Cutter (High Grade Steel), 2 Cotton Wool 200 gm, (total 37 items)  were distributed.

Emergency Assistance to Flood Affected Families in Nowshera-Pakistan – 2010

Soon after the quake hit Pakistan on 8 Octr 2005, NWHO started immediately it relief activities and responded to the needs of affected people by providing temporary shelters and food items.

New World Hope Organization Flood Relief Operation 2010

The 2010 Pakistan floods began in July 2010 following heavy monsoon rains in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Sindh, Punjab and Balochistan regions of Pakistan. The UN has described the Pakistan floods as the worst natural disaster since the 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami. New World Hope Organization established an emergency response cell and immediately sent mobile health teams (the teams comprised male and female doctors, dispensers, hygiene promoters and helpers), ambulances and medicine to the flood affected areas of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KPK) region to provide emergency health care.

Pakistan faced a catastrophe flood which the United Nation’s declared as the world’s worst natural disaster. Up to 20 million people in 78 districts of Pakistan displaced by torrential monsoon rains. The flood waters came in districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KPK) province without any warning and then really suddenly, the water went up to the roofs as a result many villages swept away. In response to the tragic disaster, NWHO distributed 500 women shawls to the 500 flood affected women in Village Shabara ( KPK) with the support of Shanti Volunteer Association (SVA) on 04 October, 2010.

On October 10, 2010, In partnership with Shanti Volunteer Association (SVA). NWHO distributed 500 hygiene kits to the 500 flood affected families in order to improve living conditions of flood affected people in Village Charsadda districts. The hygiene kits contained 01 Gauzes (10 Pieces), 01 Body Washer, 01 Tooth Brush, 01 Tooth Paste-English (35gm) , 01 Nail Cutter,  01 Foot Cleaner (Plastic Handel), 01 Soap (Life Bouy-115gm), 01 Towel (small size), 01 Medicam Shampoo (Economy Pack), 01 Vaseline (50 gm), 01 Powder for freshness (85g.), 01 Dettole (52 ml), 01 Baby Lotion -Mother care(small size), 01  Shaving Razor, 01 Jumbo Comb, 01 Tissue Roll.

Hygiene Kits distribution to 500 flood affected families in Flood Affected District Charsadda-Pakistan

In response to the Pakistan Floods 2010, with the support of Shanti Volunteer Association (SVA), New World Hope Organization (NWHO distributed 7,000 Meal ready to eat (MRE) packets to the most needed flood affected people for their lunch and dinner for two weeks in Nowshera and Charsadda Districts.

NWHO visited Akora Khattak afghan refugee camp where thousands of newly arrived Afghan refugees were living without basic living facilities.  We provided free medical treatment, consultations and medicines to the poor Afgan refugees, who didn't have proper jobs and money for medical treatment.

Impact

● Approximately 1,000 patients benefited at free medical camps.

● Women amounted to 55% of the total beneficiaries

New World Hope Organization launched tree planting campaign in Pakistan in 2007 with the objective of making Pakistan a green country. Tree planting campaigns are launched every year at the national level during spring and monsoon seasons. Every year NWHO plants trees with the involvement of general public, students, NGOs and corporate sector. Thousands of different fruit and shady plants have been planted and distributed to schools, hospitals, old age homes and other community centers as part of the campaign for protection of our environment and friendly environment.

New World Hope Organization encouraged local people to become involved in Seal the Deal -UNEP Campaign. NWHO organized lectures of environment awareness on climate change and a clean up campaign in schools and colleges in Pakistan. The events attracted many young people who were delighted to take such action and to have a say in protecting the planet. Thousands of students in Pakistan (urban and rural areas of the country) also supported the Seal the Deal! Campaign by signing the Climate Petition.

NWHO collected thousands of signatures for Seal the Deal across Pakistan and also collected signatures in Asian Disaster Reduction & Response Network (ADRRN) Annual Meeting from the  participants of Meeting.

NWHO organized a training workshop on Human Rights Based Approaches to Development from 06-07 December 2007 at Deen plaza, Institute of A1 Skill (Skill Development Council), Taxila. Pakistan.  The participants of the training workshop were representatives from different organization, institutes and universities. The aim of the training was to give local participants general idea of the principles and practices of Rights Based Approaches to Development and to discuss on the ways in which it can be implemented.

Due to increasing expenses in education and poverty, more than 70 % of the students in Pakistan are not able to carry on their education. According to UNESCO Pakistan is facing a challenge of the low literacy as compared to other countries and it has one of the lowest literacy rates in the world. In this scenario NWHO has been helping the needy/ low-income students since 2006 by providing books, uniforms and tuition fees. The NWHO scholarships give the poor children new options to break out of the cycle of poverty and give courage to the whole family. The number of scholarships award we offer depends on the funds raised every year varies by program.

In the 1990s Pakistan hosted more than four million afghan refugees on its territory. NWHO drills 03 water wells in order to improve their health condition of needy people.

NWHO in coordination with its volunteers distributed and served hot meals to the refugee children and women in Akora Khattak.This distribution was for the poor and needy Afghan refugees who had been suffering serious economic hardship due to lack of employment opportunities.

The winter relief project planned to help 400 families because in Afghan refugees camp, Akora Khattak many refugee families were living without electricity or heat and they were surviving the cold harsh winter. In their miserable condition NWHO distributed blankets, winter clothing and food to more than 400 refugee families so that they could live in the severe winter.

Free medical health camps and vaccination campaign is one such major program of NWHO to provide healthcare facilities and vaccination to meet the immediate health care needs of the underprivileged and marginalized population in rural areas and slums through standalone camps.

Medical Camps

NWHO, in collaboration with local NGOs and trusts is conducting various activities for creating awareness among the prison staff, lawyers, NGO representatives and general community regarding the rights of women, children and vulnerable prisoners since August 2006.

These activities are being held in different prisons, police lines and other government and private organizations in 03 districts of punjab. Activities include:

Relief for Victims of Flood in Pakistan

The New World Hope Organization has been fighting for the cause of women for the last 10 years and in this time we have managed to help thousands – directly through legal support, medical support and providing vocational training centers to help women gain skills, either free of charge or at very affordable costs. The computer training center and the sewing training centers operating successfully in , Wah Cantt, Gujranwala and Gujar Khan since 2005.

Massive flooding in Pakistan affected over 6.3million people, about 1.2 million homes washed away and displaced hundreds of thousands of people mostly in Sindh and Balochistan. New World Hope Organization is the first NGO among the humanitarian agencies, who started its response to flood affected communities in Sindh Province.  NWHO provided water purification tablets to 500 families and food bags and hygiene kits distributed to 300 families in Sindh Province. The food baskets contained: 3 kg rice, 1 kg tea , 2 Liter vegetable oil for cooking, 2.5 kg sugar, 2 kg beans, 2 boxes cheese triangles, 3 kg chickpeas, 1 bag lettuce, 1 macaroni bag, 1 kg milk powder.

NWHO is committed to environmental protection and conservation. NWHO launched a environmental awareness and protection program under the theme “Think, Act, Save”. The objective of the environmental protection awareness is to teach the students in Pakistan, raising awareness of the urgent and near dangers we face on land, in the atmosphere and in our water.

In 2006 NWHO initiated skills development Program with the aim to alleviate poverty and economically empower disadvantaged youth through training and skills development. Later the A1 Skills Trade Promotion & Training Organization project was established to further the mission of Skill Development Program and to help disadvantaged youth by providing income generating skills training courses.
